Tirzepatide and semaglutide for weight loss
We prescribe both tirzepatide and semaglutide, the two GLP-1 medications most widely used for medical weight loss.
Both work with your body's own appetite signals rather than against them. They slow how quickly your stomach empties and act on the parts of the brain that regulate hunger, so you feel full sooner, stay full longer, and think about food less. For most patients the result is that eating less stops feeling like a daily battle of willpower.
These are prescription medications, and they are not right for everyone. Tirzepatide
Tirzepatide acts on two gut hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, rather than one. It is given as a once-weekly injection, started at a low dose and increased gradually so your body has time to adjust.
Semaglutide
Semaglutide acts on the GLP-1 receptor and is also given as a once-weekly injection with a gradual dose increase. It has been in clinical use for longer than tirzepatide, first for type 2 diabetes and later for weight management.
Which one is right for me?
Tirzepatide and semaglutide work in similar but not identical ways, and people respond differently to each. Your medical history, any other conditions you are managing, how you tolerate the medication and your lab results all matter. Rather than deciding before we have seen your results, your provider will go through everything with you and recommend the option that fits — including dosing and what to expect as you go.
Why medical supervision matters
GLP-1 medications are widely available now from online sellers and pop-up clinics, often with no examination and no follow-up. That is where problems tend to start.
Dose increases need to be matched to how you are actually tolerating the medication. Side effects such as nausea are usually manageable when someone adjusts your plan, and miserable when nobody does. Some medical histories make these medications a poor choice, and that only surfaces if someone reviews yours. Ongoing supervision and follow-up
You are seen for follow-up visits with repeat lab work if necessary so your plan can be adjusted as your body responds. Dosing, nutrition, protein and fluid intake and any other treatment you are receiving are reviewed as you go.
